Non-Fiction and Fiction Books

Non-Fiction and Fiction Books

Non-Fiction

With non-fiction, the author is writing about a factual subject. This could be in the form of an essay, documentary, history, biography or even a textbook. Regardless of the form, it is assumed that the author is writing what they believe to be true at the time.

Think of it this way. People used to commonly believe the Earth was flat. This is what they read and what they were told. Even though we now know the Earth is not flat, those works that say it is are still non-fiction. At the time they were written they were believed to be true. So, if it a book about real people, places or things, it is non-fiction.

To get their information across to the reader, a non-fiction author should be clear and concise and write to their specific audience. Understanding the subject and the audience can make for an easy to read and entertaining work of non-fiction. It takes creativity and a thorough knowledge of the subject matter to create a non-fiction book.

Fiction

Fiction is any story that contains events that are not real, ones that are imagined and invented by the author. Most comic books are fiction, as are many mysteries, romance novels and works of science fiction. The stories can be fun and playful or serious and dark. In fiction, children can rule over adults and dogs can talk.

Fiction may also contain real elements that make it believable. The story might be the author’s invention, but the location or a historical event is a real one. Overall, it is still considered fiction, even with elements that are found in reality.

There are three main elements to works of fiction. Every work of fiction has character, plot and setting. Without these elements, there could not be an effective story. Even though it is not usually considered an element of fiction, the imagination and creativity of the author is crucial to a good story. A great author can draw you completely into their story and have you believe that everything in the story is possible – and something you never want to end.

eBooks Have Revolutionized Reading

How eBooks Have Revolutionized Reading

With the emergence of e-reader handheld devices such as the Amazon Kindle, the Barnes & Noble Nook, the Sony Reader and the Apple iPad that has an e-reader app, e-books have evolved into the latest trend. E-books are a wonderful environmentally friendly option for book lovers. Thousands of e-books can fit on an e-reader, making carrying around books both lightweight and portable. What many do not realize is their computer can actually serve as an e-book reader as well, capable of holding even more e-books than an e-reader can.

There are tens of thousands of free e-books available on the web. Thanks to Project Gutenberg, most of the classical books, fairytales and older stories have been converted into e-book format ready for download. You can find most of these through their site as well as through the Amazon Kindle store. More and more we are seeing people rekindle their love for reading through the convenience of e-books and the large array of free available eBooks to download to their e-reader.

The latest novels and bestsellers are always available as e-books as well. In fact, most e-book lovers can get the latest novels downloaded to their device within minutes and not have to wait in line at the bookstore for it to open or wait for it to be mailed to their home. E-books tend to be the same price or even cheaper than the actual books themselves. It saves the authors money on publishing fees as well.

Although the rate of e-book sales have risen tremendously, it has not affected the sales of paper books. Bookstores are still thriving, especially those that sell e-readers in their stores. Even mass market chains such as Wal-Mart and Target have joined the e-reader bandwagon. Libraries have started to cater to e-readers through their free e-books for rent via their online websites. This is a great way to bring the love of books and electronic devices together in one simple and convenient way. Best of all, we are saving trees through the use of e-books. We are also saving the landfills from filling up with more books than necessary.
